Named "A City Built on Timber," the 20-foot-tall sculpture comprises a cube with blue glass, sitting atop interlocked steel beams. The structure celebrates the role that natural elements — especially water and trees — played in Muskegon's history, from the birch bark canoes used by Indigenous people, to the lumber trade through which Muskegon’s benefactor, Charles Hackley, built his wealth, according to a press release describing the project.
