While California farmers may stand to lose up to $8.6 billion due to COVID-19, so far a federal program designed to compensate growers for their losses has only paid out $232 million. The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, which received $16 billion in funding under the CARES Act, issues payments of up to $250,000 to producers who've had losses due to schools and restaurants being closed, export disruptions, processing disruptions or other market changes due to COVID-19.
