In what may be one of the most important updates on COVID-19 therapy to date, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines added recommendations for dexamethasone. The updates are based on a preliminary report from the RECOVERY trial that showed reduced 28-day mortality among those receiving invasive mechanical ventilation or oxygen at randomization.
"This is so important because the medication has broad applicability for patients, is inexpensive, and is readily available throughout the world," said Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) President-Elect and NIH guideline contributor Greg S. Martin, MD, MS, FCCM. Join the discussion on dexamethasone and corticosteroids use.
New Recommendations:
- Use dexamethasone, 6 mg/day for up to 10 days, in patients with COVID-19 who are mechanically ventilated and in those who require supplemental oxygen but who are not mechanically ventilated.
- Do not use dexamethasone in patients with COVID-19 who do not require supplemental oxygen.
