The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation was approved as a medical specialty in 1947 by the Advisory Board of Medical Specialties. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, emphasizes prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of patients who experience limitations in function due to any disease process, injury, or symptom. PM&R multidisciplinary teams work together to achieve patient-centered goals that are aimed at restoring the optimal, or prior, level of functioning.
