Among newborns treated in the NICU, those with congenital hypothyroidism had significantly higher iodine levels than those without hypothyroidism, reported James Mills, MD, MS, of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Bethesda, Maryland, and colleagues. Specifically, as shown in their study online in the Journal of Nutrition, infants in the NICU with congenital hypothyroidism had median blood iodine concentrations of 22.7 ng/mL compared with 17.3 ng/mL for other NICU infants. Of note, the team said, these infants in the NICU did not have differing lengths of gestation.
