The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the finances of many pediatric primary care providers. According to an analysis of data from 50,000 healthcare providers in the U.S., the number of outpatient visits to pediatricians declined by 62 percent between March 1, 2020 and April 5, 2020. This drop was driven in large part by efforts to reduce children’s risk of COVID-19 infection by keeping them away from offices. While visits to pediatricians have since rebounded, the number of visits to pediatricians during the week of June 14, 2020, was still 33 percent lower than the pre-pandemic baseline—the largest decline of any specialty.
