In a pandemic that has gripped the United States since January, there have been over 3 million confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. With symptoms ranging from mild to death, the virus has left its mark on the nation, and, in particular, on health care systems and health care professionals as they care for patients with the disease. As COVID-19 has spread across the country, it has also left the effects of vicarious trauma in its wake. Vicarious traumatization, also called secondary traumatic stress, is a term coined by Laurie A. Pearlman and Karen W. Saakvitne in 1995.
