Forest thinning projects in six national forests in Arizona and New Mexico will include more guidelines to protect Mexican spotted owls during ongoing forest thinning projects. The deal announced on July 8 between the National Forest Service and the Center for Biological Diversity meant the Center's pending lawsuit seeking protections would be dropped. The spotted owl was federally listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, meaning if its population dropped any further, it could become "endangered" and trigger stricter federal regulations and land use restrictions.
