Several "immune profiles" emerged among COVID-19 patients, which appeared to lead to different disease trajectories, researchers found.
In a study of 113 patients, three distinct severity clusters emerged, as patients with moderate disease were characterized by "low expression of proinflammatory cytokines and enrichment in tissue repair genes"; those with "highly elevated proinflammatory cytokines," on the other hand, "developed worse disease and many died," researchers reported.
