Reducing the environmental impact of the energy value chain through lower methane emissions is a key component of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) sustainable development scenario 2018-2030. The international oil and gas industry accounts for one fifth of methane emissions caused by humans and the global warming potential of one tonne of methane is equivalent to 28 to 36 tons of CO2. Direct and indirect emissions of greenhouse gases across the oil and gas value chains pose a threat to the sustainability of that industry, its social license to operate, and the credibility of natural gas, in particular, as a greener transition fuel.
