There was once a time when the words "open-wheel racing" referenced a specific type of high-powered steed: the Indy car. Although F1 had its global recognition — and an on again, off again relationship on U.S. soil — here in the States, IndyCar racing was revered by an incredibly broad spectrum (until the IRL/CART split diluted and nearly obliterated the spectacle). Indy, either the track's annual 500-mile contest, or the series as a whole, has turned many a driver, team principal, engine builder, and manufacturer into legends virtually overnight.
