Practice Advisory: Possible drug induced retinal maculopathy secondary to long-term use of pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron) Scope of the problem: Pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1985 for the relief of bladder pain or discomfort associated with Interstitial Cystitis (IC)/Painful Bladder Syndrome (PBS). Currently, it is the only FDA approved oral agent for the treatment of IC/PBS.
