Charlotte's City Council was also expected to vote on the city’s 2021 budget, and a big component of that is whether they’ll move to defund the use of chemical weapons like tear gas from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s budget. During the meeting, Councilman Braxton Winston made a motion to ban the purchase of chemical agents for purpose of crowd control or dispersal. After nearly an hour of discussion, the council put it to a vote.
The motion passed, 9-2.
