MJ Hegar has been the front-runner to be the Democratic choice to challenge U.S. Sen. John Cornyn since her endorsement by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. The arrival of the pandemic shortly after the March primary has left state Sen. Royce West with little opportunity to break through with voters in a way that might disrupt Hegar’s path to the nomination. But the Memorial Day police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and the seemingly seismic impact it has had on people’s thinking about race and racism, has upset usual political assumptions in ways that have already produced some unexpected results.
