The development and availability of a vaccine against the human papillomavirus (HPV) have presented an exceptional opportunity for cancer prevention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, for the period from 2012 to 2016, an average of 34,800 cancers annually in the United States were attributable to HPV infection.
