As we continue to confront COVID-19, a new health challenge is emerging — an alarming backlog of joint replacement surgeries. Even before the pandemic, provinces were struggling to meet benchmark wait times for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries. In 2019 in fact, not a single province achieved the medically recommended six-month target for all patients. In one Ontario hospital, the average wait time reached an intolerable 547 days.
