Dentists reopening their practices are required to have personal protective equipment (PPE), but there's debate over who should have to cover the costs of the protective gear. In June, Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh issued an advisory warning dentists that charging PPE fees may violate the Consumer Protection Act. Provider-carrier contracts, as well as public and private insurance laws, typically prohibit participating providers from charging fees to insured consumers.
