Although acceptance of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations has increased in recent years, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) continue to encounter stigma, bias, and discriminatory experiences in their daily lives. (In this article, we use the initialism LGBT when referring to the sexual and gender minority population, but recognize that individuals may use a range of terms to describe their sexual orientation and gender identity.) Stress produced by chronic exposure to individual, interpersonal, and structural discrimination adversely influences health behaviors and outcomes for LGBT people.
