The global average annual cesarean delivery rate has more than tripled over the past 25 years, from 6.7% in 1990 to 21.1% in 2015. In the U.S., nearly a third of deliveries are by cesarean (31.9% in 2018), with rates above 36.0% in several states. Most studies examining the association between mode of delivery and subsequent childbearing conducted over the past 35 years have reported lower rates of childbearing after cesarean delivery compared with vaginal delivery.
