As the virus continues to devastate U.S. communities – nearly 100,000 people have died of COVID-19, the disease it causes, and the country is facing its highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression – elevated mental health problems are a major and growing concern. The new findings, based on a survey of approximately 40,000 people in early to mid-May, are one of the strongest indicators yet of how deeply the pandemic has affected Americans' psyches.
