Law enforcement officials and public health professionals are currently concentrating their efforts on reducing opiate use, and for good reason, but they may be overlooking even more prevalent substance use disorders (SUDs). The record number of fatal overdoses, the surge in treatment admissions, and the significant number of arrestees who test positive for opiates immediately following admission into local jails are all causes for concern.
