Since most churches halted weekly worship gatherings in mid-March to help prevent spread of the coronavirus, they have also seen a decline in income.
Collection plates, once the main method churchgoers used to pay their tithes, are collecting dust after more than a month of disuse.
“Obviously, it is having a major impact,†said Bishop Robert J. Baker, pastoral administrator for the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham. “We’re looking for any way to get help, to help parishes sustain themselves.â€
