- IRS announced tax relief for victims of severe storms and flooding that began in mid-May in Michigan, and victims of the earthquake and aftershocks that began in mid-March in Utah. Disaster declarations issued by FEMA permit IRS to postpone certain tax-filing and tax-payment deadlines for taxpayers who reside or have a business in the disaster area. (MI-2020-01 and UT-2020-01)
- The Minnesota Department of Revenue (DOR)offers guidance to taxpayers who may desire to amend their individual income tax returns based on federal tax law changes as a result of Congress passing the CARES Act, Families First Act (FFCRA), and the PPP Flexibility Act (PPPFA). The DOR reminds Minnesota taxpayers who amend their federal return due to CARES Act, FFCRA, or PPPFA, to also amend their Minnesota return. State law requires taxpayers to file the amended Minnesota return within 180 days after filing the amended federal return.
- New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on July 28 announced that a $15 million CARES Act funding has been made available to New Jersey small businesses struggling with the pandemic. The funding is in addition to the $100 million the New Jersey Economic Development Authority is currently administering through programs to COVID-19-impacted businesses.
- Virginia Governor Ralph Northam on July 27 announced $70 million for small businesses and nonprofit organizations whose normal operations were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding will be made available through Rebuild VA, a new economic recovery fund. Grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to approximately 7,000 applicants. In other news, Virginia H.B. 1505, creates a fund to provide grants of up to $5,000 to eligible small businesses to cover payroll, mortgage, and rent payments and utilities expenses.
