Influenza is a major respiratory infection that can lead to severe illness and death at any age, but high-risk populations such as pregnant women and infants <6 months of age have a greater risk of severe illness. No vaccines are currently licensed for infants in this age group. Because maternal antibodies cross the placenta during pregnancy, influenza vaccines administered to pregnant women are an effective means of protecting both mothers and their infants from influenza infection.
