As New Mexico worked to develop tougher regulations to reduce methane emissions — both as a source of pollution and wasted commodity — major oil and gas companies in the Permian Basin partnered with environmentalists and the University of Texas at Austin to develop a study that could result in stronger monitoring.
The collaboration was intended to find more ways and frequency to monitor for methane emissions, hoping to curb one of the industry's biggest sources of pollution.
