The average year-over-year increases in IT budget were 5.3%, 4.9%, and 6.6% in 2017, 2018, and 2019. This year, organizations reported a more modest increase of 2.4% to their IT budgets. Furthermore, organizations are projecting a similar 2.4% increase to IT budgets in 2021. The reduction in IT budget increases is likely attributed to the uncertainty associated with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
These results emerge from the 2020 SIM IT Trends Study, which collected responses from 624 unique organizations – 345 of which came directly from the CIO of those organizations. Because of the significant effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, additional questions were added to the 2020 survey to better gauge how organizations are navigating these challenges.
